The Mercedes-Benz buses for touring and regular service will be offered in an even more environmentally friendly version in future. Beyond the tried-and-tested BlueTec® 5 diesel technology there are now buses available in an EEV (Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle) version. The voluntary EEV emissions standard complies with what is currently the most stringent of all European emissions standards, with limits below those of the Euro V standard. This means even fewer emissions, for example around 30% in regard to particulate emissions and without additional fuel consumption. This result is special because it is achieved exclusively through in-engine measures and without an additional particulate filter for the Mercedes-Benz BlueTec® engines. Until now the BlueTec® engines met the voluntary EEV emissions standard through a combination of SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology and an additional diesel particulate filter. This system will also remain available.
The Mercedes-Benz Citaro urban bus family was already previously available in an EEV version but only in conjunction with an additional diesel particulate filter. With the solution it offers, the new EEV technology without diesel particulate filter provides significant advantages for the operator compared with the previous option. First of all the procurement cost is lower as there are no additional costs for the diesel particulate filter. And secondly the maintenance costs are reduced as particulate filter cleaning is no longer necessary, which also increases the availability of each bus within its transport system. The fuel consumption may also decrease due to lower exhaust back pressure. With the new EEV technology the kerb weight is lower and the operator gains one to three additional seats in the Citaro.
The EEV without diesel particulate filter is a brand new option for Mercedes-Benz rural-service buses and touring coaches. Previously the product range included Euro V engines in the rural-service and touring coach programme. The new EEV option offers real advantages for transport operators. For a low extra charge, companies can gain access to an environmentally friendly vehicle which they can use as a positive angle in their marketing strategy. Buying an EEV helps the environment without increasing fuel consumption or CO2 emissions. Last but not least, one advantage which should not be underestimated is securing easy entry into major European cities and densely populated areas. In addition incentives may be possible via reduced tolls in transit countries such as Austria.
The technology for meeting the voluntary EEV emissions standard is based on the BlueTec® 5 diesel technology from Mercedes-Benz with some additional technological details integrated. The key differences include changes to the injection and a newly designed system for the injection nozzles, tubing and support brackets. No additional exhaust gas aftertreatment beyond SCR is required. The EEV solution for Mercedes-Benz buses is at the same level as BlueTec® 5 technology in regard to maintenance, lifespan, fuel consumption and weight.
The new EEV engine technology beyond SCR without additional exhaust gas aftertreatment is available for the OM457 hLA/LA and 926 LA engines.
