For us, the ideal camper van drive system is powerful, refined and economical. And, of course, it displays a Mercedes star. After all, longevity, reliability and serviceability are all characteristics that you expect when it comes to a long-term investment such as a camper van.
There are several powerplants available for the chassis with standard frame. Equipped with the newly developed OM 651 4-cylinder CDI diesel engine, available with a choice of two power outputs, or the familiar, now uprated OM 642 V6 CDI diesel engine, the Sprinter sets new standards in terms of economic efficiency and future-compatibility:
All three diesel engines are fitted as standard with a diesel particulate filter, meet the Euro 5 exhaust gas emissions standard and are characterised by considerably lower fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions than conventional engines.
The newly developed ECO Gear 6-speed manual transmission with optimised fuel consumption is the ideal partner for the new Euro 5 engines. Thanks to a greater transmission spread, a broader overall gear ratio and the reduction of the engine speed, it significantly reduces the combined consumption figures compared with the previous diesel engines – in the case of the 4-cylinder engine by up to 1.3 l/100 km, and in the case of the 6-cylinder engine by up to 1.5 l/100 km.
The range is rounded off perfectly by a sophisticated 4-cylinder petrol engine with 6-speed manual transmission plus a particularly dynamic V6 petrol engine which comes fitted with a standard 5-speed automatic transmission (option for 4-cylinder petrol engine and CDI engines).
Alternatively, the Sprinter is available with a natural gas drive system [1].
The Natural Gas Technology (NGT) used by Mercedes-Benz is a BlueEFFICIENCY technology with extremely low exhaust emissions.
This bivalent drive system (EU 4 Gr. I) is characterised by its particularly extended range, since the driver can switch from natural gas to petrol operation and vice versa at the touch of a button.
Apart from the bivalent version, there is also a monovalent variant of the Sprinter NGT. The petrol contained in the fuel tank of reduced dimensions is only required for starting off and as an emergency reserve. The monovalent Sprinter NGT complies with the stringent EEV (Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle) exhaust gas standard. The advantage: EEV vehicles are often exempt from the access restrictions to city centres.
The engine line-up above comes with a choice of two 4-cylinder CDI diesel engines – 95 kW and 120 kW – and the V6 CDI engine with 140 kW. Like all the CDI engines, they are equipped with a diesel particulate filter as standard.
[1] Available in the standard and long body lengths, with permissible GVWs of 3.5 and 5.0 tonnes.
