In the event of a frontal collision the steering column can be a hazard and potential cause of injury. To reduce this risk, Mercedes-Benz vans are equipped with a safety steering column.

The steering column has joints and telescoping elements which can collapse if a crash occurs. This arrangement allows the steering wheel to largely move freely away from the front-end deformation.
