Consumption and emissions. What's that?

Consumption and emissions in the E-Class Saloon vary depend on equipment and engine variant. The WLTP takes into account these differences.

The required fuel quantity depends on the combustion engine's setup, vehicle size and weight as well as the driving style. The higher the consumption, the higher the carbon dioxide emissions. CO2 emissions are directly related to the amount of burnt fuel – the higher the consumption, the higher the carbon dioxide emissions. Many convenience and safety functions directly influence the fuel consumption.

The almost completely smooth surface of the innovative NANOSLIDE cylinder barrel reduces friction and thus cuts consumption and emissions.

Additional exhaust system components are relevant in addition to CO2 emissions. In particular NOx (nitrogen oxide) as well as soot particle emissions that are taken into account when analysing modern, direct-injection diesel and petrol engines are affected. In this process, a differentiation is made between the consumed amount (CO2 emissions) and how cleanly the fuel is burnt (NOx, particulate).

A number of parameters are modified in development to create a vehicle that is as efficient as possible, yet always meets our own Mercedes-Benz demands in terms of safety, design, product quality and performance.

Mercedes-Benz is also applying particulate filters in petrol engines on a large scale to further increase the environmental compatibility of vehicles.

What has become standard for diesel engines is now also available for petrol engines: particulate filters. Mercedes-Benz will be the first manufacturer to also apply particulate filters to petrol engines on a large scale to further increase vehicles' environmental compatibility.

For this purpose, Mercedes-Benz not only offers a selection of highly efficient engines but also provides special features for optimised aerodynamics on the equipment list.

      AIRPANEL

      The AIRPANEL optional extra is available for the E-Class and C-Class featuring Exclusive Line. AIRPANEL remains closed in the event of low cooling output demands. With closed louvres the radiator shutter contributes to improved vehicle aerodynamics as the air can no longer flow through the engine compartment. This reduces the drag and fuel consumption as well as CO2 emissions. Louvres are only opened once the higher cooling output is required. The system is visible from the outside and provides for an interesting, visual effect.

      AERO wheels

      Specifically designed AERO wheels with particularly low-friction running characteristics and an EU "B" label reduce consumption. This effect is even enhanced in conjunction with AERO rims, providing significantly better aerodynamics thanks to the striking design and predominantly closed surfaces.
